Hair Loss and Thinning Eyelashes? Hair Follicles and Keratin

A handful of hair in the drain, a widening part, fewer eyelashes with every curl — hair problems almost always come down to the hair follicle cycle and hair shaft structure.

  1. Anagen (growth phase): years; the hair keeps growing.
  2. Catagen (regression phase): weeks; the follicle shrinks.
  3. Telogen (resting phase): months; shedding and renewal.

More shedding usually means one of three things: anagen has been shortened, telogen shedding has synchronized (postpartum, stress, dieting), or follicles are miniaturizing (androgenetic).

Common Problem Features
Postpartum hair loss Telogen effluvium; mostly reversible
Widening part, M-pattern Androgenetic; follicle miniaturization
Fine, thin hair Shaft diameter drops before obvious shedding
Thinning eyelashes The lash cycle is shorter and easily damaged by curling / makeup removal
Thinning eyebrows Related to plucking, friction, and aging

Several Pathways in Hair-Growth Ingredients

Section titled “Several Pathways in Hair-Growth Ingredients”

Myristoyl Hexapeptide-16 (M-Hex-16) is discussed for activating growth-promoting signals in hair follicle dermal papilla cells and prolonging anagen. It is common in lash serums, brow serums, and scalp serums.

Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 (MP-17) is associated with hair keratin (Keratin) gene expression, improving lash thickness and resilience.

Biotin-GHK (Biotin-GHK): biotin bound to a tripeptide, emphasizing extracellular matrix adhesion in the follicle; studied in the context of reducing hair loss.

Minoxidil (anagen stimulation), ketoconazole (scalp microenvironment), Caffeine (follicle cycling discussions).

  • Over-washing, high-heat blow-drying, and frequent coloring or perming damage the hair shaft.
  • Scalp barrier problems and follicle inflammation (seborrheic dermatitis) accelerate hair loss.
  • Keep wash water lukewarm, and massage with fingertips rather than nails.

Eyelashes have a short anagen phase (1–3 months) and are more delicate than scalp hair:

  1. Use waterproof mascara sparingly and remove makeup gently.
  2. Do not clamp the curler hard at the lash base.
  3. Peptide lash serums can be used as part of the routine.
  4. Realistic expectations for lash growth: density and less breakage are more reliable than “growing longer out of nowhere”.

Iron, Zinc, protein, and Vitamin D deficiency are associated with telogen effluvium; poor sleep, rapid weight loss, and psychological stress are common triggers. Screen for these first, then talk about serums.

Ingredient Mechanism Common Use Evidence Notes
Minoxidil 2–5% Prolongs anagen Scalp Strong; a “shedding phase” is common
Caffeine Follicle cycling Shampoo / serum Moderate
Ketoconazole 1–2% Scalp microbiome Shampoo Adjunct for androgenetic alopecia
Myristoyl Hexapeptide-16 Papilla growth-promoting signals Lashes / scalp Cosmetic raw material
Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 Keratin expression Lashes Cosmetic raw material
Biotin-GHK Follicle adhesion Scalp Cosmetic raw material
Saw palmetto 5α-reductase discussions Oral Moderate; species variation
Week Action
1–2 Stop waterproof mascara; gentle removal; peptide serum nightly
3–4 Reduce curling; replenish protein and Iron/Zinc (if deficient)
5–8 Assess density and breakage; the nightly serum can be maintained
